What is digital locker?

A digital locker or cyberlocker is an online file or digital media storage service. Files stored include music, videos, movies, games and other media.
Microsoft uses The term as a part of its Windows Marketplace in 2004.
By storing files in a digital locker, users are able to access them anywhere they can find internet connections. Most (but not all) digital locker services require a user to register. Prices range from free to paid, and various combinations thereof.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi on July 1 will launch the digital locker facility that will help citizens digitally store their important documents, such as PAN card, passport, mark sheets and degree certificates.
Here are five things you need to know about Digital Locker or DigiLocker:

1. Digital Locker will provide secure access to government-issued documents. It uses authenticity services provided by Aadhaar.
2. Digital Locker aimed at eliminating the use of physical documents and enables sharing of verified electronic documents across government agencies.
3. Digital Locker provides a dedicated personal e-storage space to citizens, linked to their Aadhaar numbers.
4. Digital Locker will reduce the administrative overheads of government departments and agencies created due to paperwork.
It will also make it easy for Indian citizens to receive services by saving time and effort as their documents will now be available anytime, anywhere and can be shared electronically.

What are the key components of DigiLocker?
Each resident’s DigiLocker account has the following sections:
- Dashboard – This section is the first page you see when you log in and shows a summary of all your documents.
- Issued Documents – This section shows the URIs (links) of the documents or certificates issued to you by the Govt. department or other agencies participating in DigiLocker.
- Uploaded Documents –This section shows all the documents and you upload those documents. You can update the document type, eSign and share these uploaded documents.
- Shared Documents – This sections shows the list of documents which you share with others (via email).
- Activity – This section is a log of the activities. you perform in your DigiLocker account. The log included the details about the activities such as file upload, download, eSign etc.
- Issuers– This section lists the departments and agencies .departments and agencies have registered on DigiLocker as a Issuers. If these departments have issued any document/certificate to you, it will appear in the form of a URI (link) in your Issued Documents section.
What are the benefits of Digilocker?
DigiLocker aims at the concept of paperless governance. It offers the following benefits:
- Citizens can access their digital documents anytime, anywhere and share it online. This is convenient and time-saving.
- It reduces the administrative overhead of Government departments by minimizing the use of paper.
- Digital Locker makes it easier to validate the authenticity of documents as registered issuers directly issue Digital Locker.
- Self-uploaded documents can be eSigned which is similar to the process of self-attestation.
Security features in DigiLocker?
DigiLocker is safe and secure to use. We are taking all precautionary measures to ensure your data is protected and un-compromised.

- 256 Bit SSL Encryption –DigiLocker uses 256-bit secure socket layer (SSL) Encryption for information transmitted during any activity.
- Biometrics based & Mobile Authentication based Sign Up – Digital Locker uses the UIDAI provided Aadhaar system for authenticating users and allowing access to the platform. The Aadhaar system offers two authentication options
- Biometric based via fingerprint scanning,
- Mobile authentication based via OTP (one-time password).
This makes the system very secure and prevents any chance of unauthorized access.
- ISO 27001 certified Data Centre – The application is hosted in an ISO 27001 security certified data centre.
- Data Redundancy – Data is backed up in a secure environment with proper redundancy.
- Timed Log Out – To protect citizen’s account from unauthorized access, our system is designed to terminate session automatically if extended inactivity is detected.
- Security Audit – The DigiLocker application has been security audited by a recognized audit agency and the application security audit certificate has been obtained.
